OUR VISION

Healthy people in
sustainable communities –
locally, nationally, and globally.

OUR MISSION

The UW School of Public Health is dedicated to

  • education to prepare outstanding, innovative, and diverse public health leaders and scientists;
  • research to advance public health science and policies; and
  • service to promote the health and well-being of communities locally, nationally, and globally.

Strategic Plan 2012 - 2020

Since the approval of our SPH Strategic Plan in January 2012, faculty, staff, students, and community partners have begun implementing many of the goals and strategies identified in the plan.  These activities will sustain our excellence as a school in education, research, and service, and begin expanding our efforts in six key areas.

Here are some highlights to date:

  • Emerging ChallengesWork groups are meeting to begin identifying opportunities to develop these areas.
  • Improving Diversity - A new Diversity Committee is further developing the guidelines and eventual policies to ensure that our culture, practices, and curriculum sustain and attract a multiplicity of viewpoints, ethnicities, and life experiences.
  • Strengthening Community Collaborations - Student services, under a new director, is significantly enhancing community events and the practicum program.
  • Strengthening Research - We are launching pilot grants up to $40,000 to support innovative approaches to address the six emerging challenges.
  • Enhancing Community and Promoting the School - We now have a quarterly online newsletters for alumni and donors, SPH Connect, to help inform them about what we are doing and the impact of our work on communities.
  • Enhancing our School community - We have acquired and are renovating over 1,000 sq feet of space for SPH student services and activities.
  • Strengthening Teaching - A recently-formed MPH Review Work Group is discussing ways to revitalize the current MPH curriculum. The public health undergraduate program is now officially in the School, and is expanding in numbers and space, doubling enrollment from 100 to 200 students for the 2012-13 academic year.

The strategic plan will evolve over time, as will its implementation, so that we can take full advantage of opportunities as they arise, with the overarching vision of a healthier world.  As always, we welcome your input and active participation.
