Research Assistant - Environmental Health textbook (Job)
Description:
This research assistant will support Howard Frumkin in editing the next edition of Environmental Health: From Global to Local, a textbook of environmental health. The major responsibility will be managing the images (photographs, drawings, charts, maps, etc.) that will be used in the textbook. This will include establishing and maintaining a database of images, interacting with chapter authors to identify images to be used, helping evaluate potential images for use, and securing permissions to use these images.
In some cases this will involve contacting academic journals or book publishers to request permission. In other cases it will involve contacting individual artists or researchers. In still other cases it won’t be clear whom to contact, and some creative sleuthing will be needed. From time to time other duties may arise, such as checking references.
The research assistant will gain an inside look at textbook production, will have the chance to think creatively about images that support student learning, and will learn about a range of environmental health topics.
The position will run for approximately 6 months, from January 2025 through June or July 2025. It will require approximately 10 hours/week, working from any location, at flexible times. It will pay $25/hour.
Required qualifications:
- Outstanding attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and to problem-solve e.g. to determine how to secure permission to use images.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred qualification:
- Interest in environmental health.
Skills/Eligibility:
Interested candidates should email Dr. Howard Frumkin at frumkin@uw.edu, with a statement of interest, a resumé or C.V., and the names and contact information of three references.
