Public Health-Global Health Major
Hometown
Seattle, WA

Why did you choose the UW?

I grew up in Seattle, and I wanted to go to a college that inspired me to be the best version of myself with the same values that I hold dear. That’s what the UW displays and why I am here.

Why are you passionate about public health?

I want to see change and I want to be part of that change, to help find solutions to improve people’s lives and health.

What experiences at the UW have been most influential?

Hearing from those who have worked in the public health field for years as they reflect on their accomplishments and the differences they’ve made. They love doing what they do. It makes me feel incredible that I chose this amazing major.

Why did you choose the public health major?

I wanted to put myself out there, to get to know communities and give back to communities in the best way that I could. I want to help people overcome any resistance they may encounter in their everyday lives that prevent them from achieving good health.

What do you find most interesting about the field?

To be able to delve deep into social problems and to understand the different social determinants that limit people from achieving good health. Public health covers so much more than people think – it’s about safety, epidemiology, global health, population health, policy and so much more.

What are your professional goals?

I’d like to work for King County and gain real-world experience working with and within communities. I hope to someday pursue a career in medicine. Specifically, focusing on child and adolescent health.

Tell us about your extracurricular activities.

I love being outdoors, hiking and snowboarding as much as I can. I volunteer at local shelters, youth clubs and food banks when I can.

What's one piece of advice you have for prospective students?

Be passionate about your goals and what you want to see your future self doing. Whatever you do, push yourself to be a better version of yourself than you were the day before. There is always room for improvement.

Can you share an interesting fact about yourself?

Most people will not believe it when I say it, but I have two beautiful kids. I am a full-time mom. I have a boy and a girl, ages 2 and 5. They are my world.
