The HEI I will join the ten-person Technical Assistance and Incentives (TAI) team. TAI delivers help and incentives directly to businesses, schools, and other commercial properties in King County, at no charge. The team does not have enforcement authority.
TAI helps customers reduce risks and prevent pollution from hazardous materials and waste. TAI applies an equity and social justice lens to all operations, ensuring services effectively reach diverse, multilingual communities.

TAI responds to customer requests, complaints or referrals from partners like EnviroStars (see TAI may emphasize certain industries or regions based on risk. Team members may lead field projects for a chemical, industry or other issue. TAI may also support others in the Program, like providing financial incentives for a special project or gathering data to plan a new project.

The HEI I is an entry-level position and on-the-job training is provided. The incumbent will receive instruction on and coordinate with other staff on visiting businesses to provide pre-approved general information and basic technical assistance to customers. They will also learn TAI’s specialized services, such as how to provide financial incentives.

  • Bachelor’s degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience  in chemistry, natural, physical/environmental sciences, engineering, and related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience providing excellent customer service, solving issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • An understanding of how small businesses operate and an ability to communicate with small business owners, including diverse audiences.
  • Familiar with common operations that use hazardous materials or produce hazardous waste in small businesses, schools and other facilities. Basic understanding of their potential health or environmental impact and how to reduce the risks.
  • Basic understanding of current environmental regulations applicable to small business operations.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas, observations and recommendations orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of common Information Technologies and good computer skills.
  • Skilled in organizing and completing tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated skills for maintaining positive and productive working relationships, such as patience, flexibility, active listening, resolving conflicts and problem solving. Effective and collaborative participant in multi-disciplinary team meetings or coalitions.
  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds, for example to load and unload materials needed for field work.
