Research Investigator 2 - State of Washington
The Office of Nutritional Services’ mission is to create opportunities for people with limited resources to make healthy nutrition choices. The Research, Analysis and Evaluation Unit supports the office and its mission through research, data analysis and program evaluation that contribute to effective program management.
Reporting to the Research, Analysis, and Evaluation Unit Supervisor, these Research Investigators perform statistical analysis, program evaluation, and research related to the administration of the Women, Infant and Children Nutrition (WIC) program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-ED), and Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). These programs create opportunities for people with limited resources to make healthy nutrition choices, thus supporting the Department of Health mission to protect and improve the health of all people in Washington State. The results of these analyses are used to guide evidence-based decision making by office management.
These positions are full-time non-permanent position within the Division of Prevention and Community Health. Both non-permanent assignments are expected to last for 12 months. The listed salary does not include the 2% cost of living adjustment effective January 1, 2019.

- What will you be doing? – Duties include:
- Work with subject matter experts to develop the intent, scope, and audience of analyses.
- Design and conduct analyses using the most appropriate methodology.
- Work with others or write SQL queries to obtain appropriate data.
- Compile data and conduct data analysis using SAS, R, SPSS, or other statistical analysis.
- Facilitate the acquisition of data, including (as needed) providing technical assistance to others, conducting interviews, designing surveys, recording observations, or querying appropriate databases using graphic user interface or SQL software.
- Document procedures and as appropriate write reports or prepare presentations describing the results.
- Communicate the results to office subject matter experts using plain language.
- Assist program subject matter experts with the interpretation of the results and suggest ways for them to present and use the results in ways stakeholders can understand.
What we’re looking for
Success in this position requires one to be a team player, defined as having a driving passion for the work, bringing humility to their job and people interactions, and understanding how their words and actions affect others.
- A Bachelor’s Degree in one of the physical, biological, social, behavioral, or health-related sciences;
- Three (3) years of experience in experimental or analytical research in a public agency, public or private research corporation, nonprofit research corporation, or university research center.
- A Master’s Degree in one of the behavioral, biological, educational, health-related, physical, or social sciences;
- One (1) year of experience in experimental or analytical research in a public agency, public or private research corporation, nonprofit research corporation, or university research center.
- One (1) or more years of experience with data mining and analysis in behavioral, education, marketing, public health, or social research.
Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions

- Work Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (A flexible schedule will be considered if requested). The incumbent may be expected to adjust the work schedule to meet business needs.
- Occasionally work in excess of 40 hours per week and/or to adjust normally scheduled hours, which may include evening and weekends.
- Occasionally travel throughout the state (including rural areas) which may include overnight stays.
- Legally operate a state or privately owned vehicle or provide alternative transportation.
- Work in a fast-paced/stressful environment with multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
- Move object weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Participate in emergency response activities and when the Agency Coordination center is activated.
This is a position covered by a bargaining unit for which the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE) is the exclusive representative.
