The mission of the Surveillance and Evaluation (S&E) section is to provide strategic information to guide policy and programs that serve the populations in Washington State. S&E gathers, analyzes, interprets and reports on data that describes the health status, health care, behaviors, and other pertinent issues related to health.
Under the direction of the section manager, this position provides surveillance and epidemiologic leadership, coordination and expertise. This position leads and supervises a team of epidemiologists and other staff with a focus on maternal and child health surveillance systems. Surveillance and related activities in the unit include Birth Defects Surveillance System, Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, Healthy Youth Survey, Maternal Mortality Review, Child Death Review, and the Family Planning Program.
In this position, you will also serve as a subject matter expert to Office of Family & Community Health Improvement (OFCHI) staff and agency leadership on surveillance systems and epidemiologic study design, analysis, and interpretation. The Surveillance Unit works in partnership with program staff in OFCHI as well as the other units in S&E, including the Evaluation Unit and Home Visiting Unit.
This position is within the Division of Prevention and Community Health (PCH). Our teams support the Department of Health’s mission by collaborating with our partners and stakeholders to enhance the health of individuals, families, and communities. Our division employees work in two primary locations and a few local health departments, to deliver public health services statewide.

 What will you be doing? – Duties include:
  • Plan, assign and review the work of staff, adjusting assignments and schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels and respond to fluctuating workloads.
  • Mentor staff on epidemiologic methods and agency policies.
  • Provides epidemiologic expertise in health and services affecting the maternal and child health populations.
  • Work with the section manager to identify epidemiologic needs within the office related to the surveillance systems.
  • Represent DOH on steering committees, cross-agency workgroups or with federal project officers.
  • Design and develop surveillance plans, and work with partners and stakeholders to collect and manage surveillance data.
  • Provide epidemiologic leadership and expertise related to surveillance data to sections and programs within the office.
  • Actively participate in planning cross-unit or office interventions that improve health outcomes.
  • Analyze and interpret health data.
  • Provide epidemiologic expertise to staff and partners related to study design, analytic techniques, and use of statistical software in relation to surveillance and related data.

Required Qualifications

Option 1:
  • A Master’s Degree in epidemiology, with 12 quarter units of biostatistics or equivalent, and 12 quarter units of epidemiology or equivalent;
  • Three (3) years of experience in epidemiology;
  • Two (2) years of experience leading teams.

 Option 2:

  • A Master’s degree in public health or related field, with 12 quarter units of biostatistics or equivalent, and 12 quarter units of epidemiology or equivalent;
  • Five (5) years of experience in epidemiology;
  • Two (2) years of experience leading teams.

 Preferred/Desired Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience in epidemiology.
  • Two (2) years of experience supervising teams doing epidemiology, research, or evaluation.
  • Doctoral degree in epidemiology.
  • Three (3) years of experience in maternal and child health epidemiology.
