Social Research Scientist - Youth Gun Violence Report - Public Health - Seattle & King County
Public Health – Seattle and King County is seeking a Social Research Scientist to perform professional, independent, and highly skilled evaluation and research to develop a Youth Gun Violence Report. The Social Research Scientist will engage and collaborate with King County families, youth, and young adults that are either at-risk of or have experience with the issue of gun violence. The report will include recommendations and strategies to address systemic issues of gun violence among youth and young adults. This is a one-year project. We are looking for someone with experience in violence and injury prevention and a passion for system reform leading to equity and social justice.

This position will last one year, with a possibility of extension.

Work Location: Chinook Building, 401 Fifth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98104
Work Schedule: The normal workweek is Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will, from time to time, require evening meetings.
- Conduct a comprehensive inventory of existing county programs that focus on youth violence prevention, intervention, and other community-based efforts in the county, such as Best Starts for Kids, Community Correction, Juvenile Justice Data and the Family Intervention and Restorative Services Program (FIRS).
- Engage with youth, young adults, their families, and providers who work with youth and their families on issues related to gun violence. This includes collaborating to develop, collect, and interpret data which may include: individual and/or family interviews, focus groups, community meetings, telephone/mail/web-based surveys, or other qualitative methods.
- Synthesize literature for development of policy and/or program recommendations, identification of best practices, and evaluation of existing gun violence prevention strategies.
- Conduct qualitative data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Synthesize qualitative findings to inform recommendations and strategies to prevent youth and young adult gun violence.
- Develop a report on gun violence amongst King County youth and young adults, based on findings from all of the above.
- Prepare presentations in a style suitable for a wide variety of audiences, ranging from elected officials, members of the general public, to community advocates, and affected communities.
- Manage project efficiently, with time and budget constraints, and coordination with multiple stakeholders.
- Identify potential funding sources and write major grant proposals, alone or in collaboration with other colleagues and partners.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of: public health practice and principles, the determinants of population health, violence and injury prevention, advanced qualitative analytical and interpretative skills, basic quantitative analysis principles and methods, and team dynamics to ensure successful team interaction.
- Four to five years experience in: applied qualitative research methods and techniques and designing and managing an evaluation or research project; evaluation methods and techniques; developing data collection methods for community assessments; and computerized database systems.
- Deep knowledge of equity and social justice principles and practices, and understanding of the effects of place-, race- and policy & systems-based inequities on communities of color.
- Experience with youth and families, especially in communities where gun violence has had a disproportionate impact.
- Demonstrated success in collaboration with quantitative researchers, stakeholders, and local community groups in the development and execution of an evaluation or research process.
- Professional level skills and abilities to manage a highly visible and politically sensitive project with multiple tasks requiring attention to detail, coordination of effort with elected officials and other government and community based agencies; and ensure compliance with human subject (IRB) protocols.
- Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of individuals, including community members, elected officials, and representatives of agencies/organizations; and partners.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds and build consensus among a diverse group of individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to: oversee, write, and present reports in multiple formats for multiple audiences; prepare and present data and translate findings and conclusions into clear and concise reports, presentations, infographics, etc. for lay and technical audiences.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Skill and demonstrated proficiency in: Microsoft Office, data base creation and maintenance, project management, Atlas-ti, NVivo, Dedoose, or a comparable software for qualitative analysis; RedCap, Survey Monkey or comparable software for administering web-surveys.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License or the ability to travel
