Description:

The University of Washington Nutritional Sciences Program prepares students to improve individual and population health through the study of foods, nutrients, dietary behaviors, health outcomes, and food and policy environments. The Program offers the Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health major (BA) and Nutrition minor; graduate degrees including the MS, MPH, and PhD; and graduate level training leading to the Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) professional credential.

The Nutritional Sciences program is accepting applications for one teaching assistant position to support an undergraduate course with expected enrollment of 70 students.

Course Description:  Impact of diet on health and the prevention of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other non-communicable diseases. Examines diet-health relationships; social, environmental, and economic factors in eating behavior; and evidence base behind dietary guidelines. Assignments will focus on synthesizing and evaluating scientific literature and popular press articles related to diet and health.

Duties include:

  • Attend class: M 1:30-3:20 in BAG 261
  • Independently prepare and lead weekly discussion section, F 1:30-2:20 in SMI 304. Content/activities for the weekly discussions will be directed by the course instructor but prepared by the teaching assistant.
  • Communicate with and aid guest speakers.
  • Assist in drafting assignments/exams.
  • Grade student projects, quizzes, and examinations.
  • Set up and provide support for computer equipment, course website, and instructional technologies.
  • Respond to student questions by email and in class.
  • Hold weekly office hours and arrange additional help sessions as needed.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Experience in epidemiology (e.g., taken EPI 511 or EPI 512/EPI 513) is ideal.
  • Master’s or doctoral student with background (education, experience) in nutrition and food systems.
  • TA applicants without prior UW teaching or TA experience must have completed the Center for Teaching and Learning’s TA Conference offered each September. Participation in the TA conference is recommended for Reader/Grader applicants but is not required. Additional training may be required.
  • Teaching Assistants must be enrolled for at least 10 credits during the quarter of employment.

Compensation:

  • Teaching Assistant (TA) Positions are 50% FTE (20 hours/week) from 3/16/20 to 6/15/20. Pay rates are established in accordance with the RA/TA union contract.
  • TA positions also provide GAIP (medical/dental/vision insurance) and a tuition waiver for the quarter of employment.
