The Kaiser Permanente Research Program on Genes, Environment and Health (RPGEH) is a scientific research program at the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research that facilitates and conducts large-scale studies of genetic and environmental factors that influence common diseases such as heart disease, cancer, psychiatric disorders, vision disorders, and many others, as well as health-related traits such as blood pressure, and response to medications.

 We are seeking an experienced Data Consultant or Senior Data Consultant who has a background in quantitative and qualitative analyses and experience performing analyses on large genomic datasets to join our research team. The ideal candidate will have strong understanding of statistical analyses and familiarity with multiple statistical programming languages such as R, SAS, and other languages such as Python and SQL.

 In this role, you will function as a high-level statistical analytics programmer on a variety of health research projects that utilize genomic data linked to electronic health records. Duties include performing data management and statistical analyses on very large-scale genomic databases, including genome-wide association studies and related analyses on a high-performance computing cluster. In addition, you will be responsible for performing a wide variety of statistical analyses used in epidemiologic studies on data drawn from Kaiser Permanente clinical and research databases, combined with genomic data (from whole genome SNP microarrays, whole exome arrays, and whole exome sequence data, as well as whole genome sequence data). Working with scientist investigators, you will be responsible for carrying out statistical analyses, reporting and tabling results, participating in interpretation and reporting of results, and development of manuscripts and grant proposals.

• At least three/five years of programming in R, SAS, or equivalent statistical analytical programming language

• Knowledge of basic Unix command lines

• At least three/five years of related analytical consulting experience
• A bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, genetics, social science or a related field
• Broad familiarity with health research, medical terminology, study design, and outcomes measurement
• Experience with analytical manipulation and interpretation of large databases
• Microsoft Office skills
• Very strong analytic and critical thinking skills, writing skills, communication skills, consulting skills, and the ability to work within a team
• The ability to express complex analytical and technical information to senior scientists or to audiences with clinical training
• An independent self-starter

Preferred Qualifications Include:

• A master’s degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, statistics, or public health preferred
• Five or more years of statistical analytic consulting experience
• Education or experience in epidemiologic research or public health

• Expertise in manipulating large and complex data with different languages such as R, Python, SAS, and SQL.
• Experience performing genome-wide association studies (GWAS), heritability estimates, admixture studies, Mendelian Randomization analyses, and analyses involving exploring/investigating genetic variants.
• Extraction of phenotypic data from longitudinal electronic health records (EHRs) and from KP clinical research databases
• Practical knowledge of genetics and experience working with genomic data using PLINK, GCTA, or similar genetic analytical programs
• Experience with performing in silico genomic analyses and in silico genomic analysis tools
• Experience working with Unix environment and use of HPC for parallel computing analyses
