Description:

The Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) invites applications
for a postdoctoral position offering opportunities to participate in research at the junction of
environmental health, metabolic disease and molecular epidemiology.
We are particularly seeking individuals looking for training and research experience in areas relevant to
type 2 diabetes, obesity and fatty liver disease, with interests in environmental contributions to metabolic
disease, integration of genetic traits and omics signatures, and environmental chemical exposures in big
data analysis.


A strength of the Keck School of Medicine at USC is the etiologic, intervention, clinical and basic science
research on obesity and its metabolic consequences. The department has a leading research group in
environmental epidemiology and biostatistics, with an active and well-funded program in environmental
health effects research, including the environmental causes of obesity and metabolic disease.
A dynamic and diverse group of investigators in the Southern California Environmental Health Sciences
Center (SCEHSC), also housed in the Department of Preventive Medicine, offers opportunities for a wide
range of research collaborations with investigators at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Caltech, UCLA
and other southern California institutions. The NIEHS-funded SCEHSC features an innovative Career
Development Program for early investigators to strengthen their skills and knowledge base needed for
career advancement (e.g., developing career directions and priorities, grant writing, making effective
presentations, preparing manuscripts, and developing multidisciplinary research teams). The program has
established a track record of success in helping junior investigators to obtain faculty positions and a first
NIH award.


The Research Fellow will be responsible for:
- Conceiving and designing the project
- Programming independent analyses
- Writing the first draft of manuscripts
- Presenting research at regional and/or national conferences

Skills/Eligibility:

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Doctoral degree required (e.g. PhD, MD, DO, DVM, PharmD). Degree in Environmental Health,
Epidemiology, or a related discipline preferred
- Ability to manage multiple projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential attributes for this position.
- Knowledge of and experience with spreadsheet, relational database, graphics and word processing
software is required. Intermediate to advanced skills with at least one statistical software package is
required, e.g SAS, R, STATA.
- Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
