Student Assistant - Medical Data Abstractor, Quality Improvement Team - Junior or Senior UG - SORCE and UW Medicine

LOCATION: Seattle, WA

CLOSING DATE: November 1, 2020

OPPORTUNITY TYPE: Job

JOB #: 16367

POSTED: October 1, 2020

Description:

Are you a junior or senior undergraduate student considering a career in clinical research, medicine, or public health? Help SORCE and UW Medicine improve patient outcomes while learning valuable skills.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

As part of SORCE’s Quality Improvement (QI) workgroup, you will review and abstract data from electronic medical records to support various regional and national quality improvement surgical registries. You will receive extensive training to ensure consistent and accurate data collection and data entry, which is imperative for this role. However, not all of your time will be spent looking at data and spreadsheets. Part of your data collection efforts may involve contacting study participants over the telephone in order to gather post-operative follow-up data.

WHEN AND WHERE YOU WILL DO IT

Keeping up with registry deadlines and varying monthly workloads means you will work between 15-19 hours per week. Work hours are typically during regular business hours, especially during the training period. Alternative schedules may be considered and are contingent upon demonstrated competency and supervisor approval. Currently, most of our staff is working remotely (due to COVID-19) but you may be asked to come into the SORCE office for some of your training. Rest assured that appropriate COVID-19 prevention measures are in place.

WHAT YOU WILL BRING

You are a deadline-driven, high-performer with meticulous attention to detail, solid knowledge of medical terminology, and a willingness to commit a minimum of six months to this role.

WHAT YOU WILL TAKE AWAY

You will develop proficiency in viewing and abstracting data from both Epic and Cerner Electronic Health Records (EHRs), gain experience working with large datasets, and become familiar with a multitude of surgical procedures. You will also work with experienced project coordinators who can provide career mentorship and guidance in many different research skills/areas including QI processes, quality audits, and eligibility screening.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT

The data you abstract will be used to monitor and improve the quality of surgical care at UW Medicine by contributing to the following quality improvement surgical registries: NSQIPSCOAP, and MBSAQIP. These quality improvement programs collect information about the care of surgical patients, benchmark it against regional or national standards, and provide actionable data that is used to drive improvements in patient care, health outcomes, and clinical research.
