Faculty Mentor - Northwest Public Health and Primary Care Leadership Institute

LOCATION: Seattle, WA

CLOSING DATE: open until filled

OPPORTUNITY TYPE: Job

JOB #: 16572

POSTED: November 19, 2020

Description:

The Northwest Public Health and Primary Care Leadership Institute is recruiting faculty to mentor mid-career health professionals for its 2021 cohort. The faculty will work with public health and health care professionals during two virtual 3 day meetings (afternoons March 10–12 and June 23–25) and one tentatively planned in-person 3 day meeting in Seattle (October 21–23).

The Leadership Institute focuses on the intersection of public health and primary care, using a health equity focus and an understanding of the life-course perspective to frame leadership development. This program builds on the long-standing training programs of the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice and Northwest Regional Primary Care Association and is designed to help experienced public health and primary care professionals become the next generation of leaders in their fields.

The faculty mentors are part of the Leadership Institute’s core faculty. Each faculty mentor will coach 12 scholars through selecting, completing, and presenting a Leadership Project specific to the scholar’s work or organization.  The faculty mentors’ specific duties are to:

  • Participate in a virtual faculty meeting before and after each of the three meetings
  • Collaborate with other faculty to support each scholar’s personal leadership development
  • Attend the first half day of the Leadership Institute and two additional one hour sessions at each of the three meetings
  • Facilitate a one hour session at each meeting
  • Review scholar project proposals and updates
  • Conduct periodic coaching calls and emails with scholars and provide feedback, guidance, and mentorship
  • Guide the scholars in giving peer feedback on their projects
  • Review scholars’ final video presentations

We seek faculty who enjoy connecting with and mentoring others in their professional journeys. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of the social determinants of health and equity, including the influence of racism in public health and healthcare systems. Public health and/or health care leadership experience is highly desirable, as is experience in developing cross-sector or multi-disciplinary collaborations. Prior teaching experience is helpful but not required. People of color and other underrepresented groups and those with experience in rural areas or with medically underserved populations are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity.

This is an outstanding opportunity for part-time or semi-retired individuals who wish to have an impact on the next generation of public health and primary care leaders. Faculty mentors will be reimbursed $3750 for approximately 90 hours of work over the eight month Institute; individuals with existing University of Washington faculty appointments who serve as faculty mentors will be compensated through the University payroll system.

If you are interested or have questions please email the Leadership Institute faculty lead (Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, MD MPH at kwangett@uw.edu).
