Description:

Reporting to the Office of Drinking Water (ODW) Deputy Director of Operations, the NW Regional Manager leads a team of approximately 20 staff to fulfill the Office of Drinking Water mission, vision, and values.  This position is responsible for implementing the State Board of Health Drinking Water Regulations for water purveyors in a 7-county area in NW Washington so that the people of Washington State have safe and reliable drinking water.  

 

The NW Region includes approximately 895 community and 447 non-community Group A water systems, including the major cities of Tacoma, Seattle, Bellevue, Everett, Mt Vernon, Bellingham, Anacortes, and Oak Harbor.  These water systems serve approximately 50% of the state population.

 

The Office of Drinking Water focuses on oversight of public drinking water systems, including activities associated with water quality monitoring, water system planning, waterworks operator certification, implementation of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act, and implementation of the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund.

 

The Environmental Public Health Division supports the department’s mission by working with local governments and other agencies in the areas of safe drinking water, food safety, shellfish protection, radiation safety, wastewater management, pesticide exposures, vector-borne disease, general environmental health and safety issues, and health risk assessments.  

 

The duty station for this position is Kent, WA.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, telework (mobile-work) is currently expected.  When approved to return, the incumbent is expected to report to the duty station for work activities.

This candidate is a team player, strong leader, experienced in emergency management and response, and has experience, education, and comfort in communicating drinking water issues with the public. 

 

Preference may be given to candidates who have the following DESIRED education and experience:      

 

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in public health, environmental health, environmental engineering, or closely related field; and the following:
    1. Three (3) or more years of progressively responsible management experience in a public health or environmental public health program.
    2. Three (3) or more years of experience with drinking water-related technical issues. 
    3. Basic understanding of public water systems through field experience. 
    4. Knowledge of state and national drinking water regulatory framework.

 

OR

 

  • Seven (7) or more years of progressively responsible management experience in a public health or environmental public health program.
  • Seven (7) or more years of experience with drinking water-related technical issues. 
  • Basic understanding of public water systems through field experience. 
  • Knowledge of state and national drinking water regulatory framework.
