Description:

The purpose of this unpaid internship is to provide training/experience to a student who would like to pursue a career in research. The intern will work under the supervision of the Biospecimen Coordinator for a research program in the Public Health Sciences Division at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. This research program includes multiple, large, NIH-funded epidemiology projects that focus on research on cancer genetics, etiology, screening, and survival in colorectal cancer and other chronic diseases. This position will allow the intern to gain hands-on experience specifically in biomedical research, with training in scientific biospecimen management, including sample collection, processing, maintenance, organization, tracking, and storage. This is an office-based internship that helps collect biospecimens from research participants, facilitates and coordinates work with various laboratories throughout Fred Hutch, and helps pull and organize research samples for scientific collaborators. Some Universities/Colleges will apply credit for the work and we are happy to help complete required documents – please check with your individual institutions for their requirements.

Responsibilities

The intern will be trained in a range of skills and techniques, depending on the projects assigned. Under the guidance of the Biospecimen Coordinator and Faculty mentor, the intern will learn research fundamentals and some of the following skill sets:

  • Human Subjects Training
  • Bloodborne Pathogens Training
  • Proper handling, storage, and shipping of research specimens, including DNA, saliva, cell lines, and tissue
  • Collection of samples from research participants
  • Accurate sample tracking, including using and updating study databases
  • Coordination with Shared Resource Laboratories
  • Communication with scientific collaborators
  • Biorepository maintenance and organization, including inventory management
  • Informed Consent and Institutional Review Board processes
  • Data entry and effective quality control procedures
  • HIPAA training to maintain participant confidentiality

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program
  • Completed 1 year of undergraduate level science courses
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working in a professional setting as a paid employee or volunteer
  • Good communication skills and an interest in learning
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good numeracy, literacy and organizational skills
  • Onsite work expected
