City Fruit harvested over 46,000 pounds of fruit last year from residential fruit trees and public orchards, using over 920 volunteers. The fruit was donated to 29 Seattle area food banks and meal programs so that people living in poverty could have access to fresh local fruit. The Summer Associate’s (SA’s) role as a program coordinator/community harvester will be split between supporting our Harvest Team on harvests throughout the city; communicating with our network of food banks and community partners to coordinate fruit distributions; and planning Fruit for All Pop-Up’s in communities and in collaboration with our community partners. This VISTA opportunity is a project of Harvest Against Hunger, which connects local growers, food banks and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. The Harvest VISTA program finds innovative ways to decrease waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce for food bank clients. The VISTA SA program will work in an intensive level of summer service for 10 weeks.
Member Duties : The City Fruit Program Coordinator Summer Associate VISTA will build the capacity of City Fruit by increasing the amount of fruit that is collected during the harvesting season by participating in harvesting. The SA will increase the number of neighbors who will receive fruits by developing new partnerships with food pantries, meal programs, and community partners. Lastly, the SA will elevate the work of food pantries, meal programs, and community partners by collecting and sharing the stories of our partnerships. | |
