Description:

The Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) seeks an experienced organizer to coordinate the involvement of students and youth in the Coalition of Immokalee Workers’ (CIW) Campaign for Fair Food. Within the organization’s leadership structure, two SFA staff members work closely together to direct education, leadership and action within the SFA network. Ideal candidates are highly responsible, work well in teams as part of a fast-paced environment, and possess excellent written and verbal skills.

The SFA works in direct partnership with the CIW, an internationally recognized farmworker-led organization, to transform longstanding human rights abuses in the agriculture industry through securing agreements with major food retailers to implement the CIW’s uniquely successful Fair Food Program. The SFA organizers work as part of the broader Alliance for Fair Food (AFF) staff.

Location: Preferably in Immokalee, FL, remote option available, with very frequent and often long-term travel

Responsibilities
We welcome applicants with diverse skills — from organizing with constituencies other than students and youth, to finances and fundraising, to web and design skills — and will seek to integrate a new staff member into the team in such a way that suits both the needs of the Campaign for Fair Food and the skills and interests of the incoming staffer.

Student/Youth Organizing
Coordinate a youth leadership development program, including campaign strategy gatherings, skills trainings, and regular communication with SFA’s national Steering Committee
Build and maintain strong relationships with SFA members and allies around the country, including university-based SFA chapters, national and local student organizations, individual students and youth, and professors, teachers and university
staff
Help design and carry out student-led organizing campaigns to further the goals of the Campaign for Fair Food
Advise, develop, and disseminate materials and written resources for students and youth;
Compose and disseminate SFA communications (e-blasts, blog posts, digital media, social media) and public messaging for SFA Regional and National Organizing & Mobilizations
Together with CIW and AFF staff, formulate overall Campaign for Fair Food strategy
Educate and organize with students, Fair Food Group members and various other communities regionally and nationally to plan mobilizations and tours (often involves travel)
Plan logistical elements and coordination of events and direct actions
Develop and carry out press strategy
Education & Outreach
Co-present and facilitate workshops with CIW members during student/youth visits to Immokalee and at national conferences, gatherings and speaking events
Interpret between Spanish and English for presentations and support with written translation as needed
Raise consciousness and engage base through targeted outreach, online actions, institutional endorsements, sign-on letters, etc
Direct Support for the CIW & Farmworker Community
Assist with interpretation, transportation for CIW members, wage theft and labor violation complaints, childcare during community meetings, technology troubleshooting and support, and more.
Organizational Development
Maintain listservs, organizational and campaign websites, and a supporter contact database;
Provide content for foundational fundraising efforts and grant writing, as well as co-designing grassroots fundraising drives;
Coordinate AFF internship and volunteer programs;
Alongside CIW and AFF staff, coordinate with AFF Comité (AFF’s legal Board of Directors) in the ongoing organizational development of the Alliance for Fair Food.

Skills/Eligibility:

Deep commitment to social and economic justice, building movements for collective liberation;
Prior organizing experience, including student organizing; recent involvement in the Campaign for Fair Food, preferred;
Bilingual in Spanish and English; proficiency in Haitian Creole is a plus;
Excellent time management and planning skills;
Ability to travel frequently and work long hours;
Computer proficiency;
Experience living or working in low-income, immigrant, or multi-cultural communities;
A commitment of at least two years is required.
