Position Summary

The School of Public Health MPH Common Core is seeking two Teaching Assistants (TAs) for PHI 513, Analytic Skills for Public Health II.  Each position is 20 hours per week during the Winter 2022 quarter.  Beginning with the academic year 2020-2021, the MPH program includes six courses, taken as a single cohort by all MPH degree students, in the first year of study. These TAs will support the teaching of 1 course (PHI 513), with anticipated course enrollment of approximately 155 students. PHI 513 will take place MW from 11:30-12:50.

Course Description

This course will introduce qualitative and mixed methods and their relevance to rigorous public health research and practice. This course places a strong emphasis on qualitative data analysis as an integral dimension of the mixed-methods approach. The first part of the course will describe contexts for and types of qualitative research questions, introduce frameworks, study designs and sampling approaches in qualitative research, and apply methods for data collection and analysis. The second part of this course focuses on mixed methods research and the integration of quantitative measures of magnitude and frequency with qualitative measures of meaning to produce rich contextual understandings of complex behaviors, cultures, and characteristics.

  • Request or acquire necessary equipment
  • Prepare and maintain course participation records
  • Communicate with students, and respond to student requests and emails in a timely manner 
  • Review literature
  • Other tasks, as necessary

Required Qualifications

Minimum standing of current graduate student in the School of Public Health

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Canvas; prior experience as a teaching assistant

Experience with qualitative and/or mixed methods research
