Thurston County Public Health is hiring for one (1) Public Health Program Assistant I position in the Environmental Health division water laboratory for Onsite/Land Use/Drinking Water program. This position provides administrative and technical support related to public health programs by responding to public inquires on programs, services and associated procedures.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
  • Providing information to the public by phone, letter or in person related to program requirements; to include regulations, codes, fees and permit procedures related to building sites, construction, sewage, water systems, and the drinking water laboratory.
  • Establishing files and entering appropriate information into computer programs and/or database.
  • Creating and maintaining databases and spreadsheets as well as daily application processing and preparing reports.
  • Responsible for follow up, tracking, quality assurance, and reporting in response to state requirements.
  • Requires the ability to multi-task and pay attention to detail.
  • Monitors and coordinates purchasing, distribution of program inventory, brochures, and other supplies. Specific tasks may include:
    • Creating monthly bills
    • Tracking and processing payments in Permit Tracking Database and Microsoft Access
    • Creating/maintaining billing accounts
    • Processing water sample results (via mail, email and fax)
    • Preparing and distributing drinking water laboratory supplies
    • Sending results to the public, state agencies, and federal agencies
    • Processing and distributing incoming mail
    • Route incoming applications
    • Answering incoming phone calls/emails

Skills/Eligibility:
QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of related office experience, which included general office practices and arithmetic, basic bookkeeping, customer service, filing, etc.
  • Must have the ability to operate a personal computer and applicable software to perform the essential job functions of the position.

 

DESIRED SKILLS:

 

  • Depending upon area of assignment, incumbent must have knowledge of sanitary codes and related procedures.
  • Previous experience with interpreting and applying program information in making work decisions or in supplying information to others is desired.
  • Ability to maintain complex specialized records and prepare narrative or statistical reports.
