Summary

The incumbent is responsible for providing direct environmental health services in Food Protection, Vector Control (rabies, plague, hantavirus, etc.), Community Injury Prevention, Water Quality, Waste Management, and Emergency Management for assigned tribes, and may provide environmental health technical advice and buy-back services to 638 Contract Tribes.

Duties

  • Conducts professional EH training and presentations on general environmental health (EH) and injury prevention topics for tribal and IHS audiences.
  • Develops, and assists in carrying out a comprehensive environmental health (EH) services program for assigned tribes.
  • Incumbent is responsible for managing the following in relation to the Lay Vaccinator (LV) Program (determine specific needs for annual rabies clinics & oversee tribal LVs to meet program training requirements).
  • Provides professional consultation in institutional environmental health program initiatives, emergency management, and special projects.
  • Assists the District Sanitarian in assessing community injury prevention needs.
  • Conducts supervised survey and incident investigations related to community injury prevention, completing forms and reports as appropriate.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education (for GS-5 positions): A full 4-year course of study that meets all the requirements for a bachelor’s degree, and that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in a science or any combination of sciences directly related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical science).
or
Experience 
(for GS-5 positions): Four years of experience in inspectional, investigational, technical support, or other responsible work that provided a knowledge and a fundamental understanding of, and the ability to use, environmental health principles, methods, and techniques equivalent to that which would have been gained through a 4-year college curriculum.

or A combination of education and experience as described above.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-07 - One year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level that equipped me with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples include: inspecting and providing advice for proper food preparation and sanitation; inspecting facilities and water/wastewater systems for compliance with standards and regulations; inspecting institutions such as Head Starts, daycares, schools, ambulatory health care facilities, elderly nutrition programs, and/or business establishments against standards and regulations; preparing written reports to discuss findings and recommendations for environmental health conditions of facilities; and assisting in the development of a comprehensive environmental health program based on the needs of the community.

Or 1 full year of graduate level education related to environmental health (such as sanitary science, public health, chemistry, microbiology, or any appropriate agricultural, biological, or physical sciences appropriate to the position).

Or Meet the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement based on my class standing, grade-point average, or honor society membership.

Or Have a combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
