Industrial Hygienist - Phillips 66
Description:
The Industrial Hygienist, Ferndale Refinery is responsible for supporting the Ferndale Refinery Health & Safety Team by managing the industrial hygiene programs; providing Industrial Hygiene (IH) leadership and technical support for operations, maintenance, and technical staff; managing the site’s exposure assessment plan; and ensuring compliance with regulations and company requirements.
This position is eligible for Phillips 66 Domestic Relocation Policy assistance, and is eligible for the 9/80 work schedule per Phillips 66 9/80 Policy.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Developing and executing the refinery’s annual Exposure Assessment and IH Monitoring Plans
- Maintaining the IH monitoring database; Using the data to regularly report metrics, trends and recommendations to manage exposures
- Managing the refinery’s respiratory protection and hearing conservation programs; Overseeing compliance with medical clearance, respirator fit testing, and ear plug validation expectations
- Providing guidance on the site’s personal protective equipment (PPE) program for chemical and physical agent hazard protection
- Managing the site’s portable gas monitor and personal single gas monitor programs; Regularly auditing compliance with calibrations, bump testing, and reporting expectations
- Serving as the site’s Radiation Safety Officer (RSO); Ensuring compliance with the State radioactive materials license conditions and x-ray device registration requirements
- Managing the Safety Data Sheet on-line database for the site; Coordinating the new chemical review and approval process
- Developing and presenting new hire and periodic training on company IH programs, regulatory requirements, and general IH awareness
- Training and advising supervisors and management in the recognition of safety and health protection procedures and hazard identification
- Providing IH leadership during turnaround planning and execution, including reviewing ventilation plans, and reviewing exposure control plans for silica, hexavalent chromium, lead, and asbestos
- Serving as the site’s IH/Occupational Health Subject Matter Expert (SME) for PSM Management of Change (MOC) proposals
- Providing ergonomic assessments for office and field personnel
- Supporting the Health and Safety Team with safety backup as needed
- Supporting the Medical Department with requests for exposure assessments, including reproductive and developmental health assessments
- Advocating for initiatives to enhance occupational health, including coordinating the annual review of the site’s Process for Health Improvement (POHI) and monitoring improvement goal progress
- Supporting the refinery Emergency Response Team, including community monitoring as needed
- Ensuring contractors maintain IH programs that meet regulatory requirements and company expectations
- Managing and auditing the site’s IH programs, ensuring they meet regulatory requirements and company safety and health standards and policies
- Networking with department, corporate and other site HSE functions on IH issues, to include participating the corporate Industrial Hygiene Steering Team (IHST)
Skills/Eligibility:
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Loss Prevention, Toxicology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field
- Experience implementing OSHA health and safety regulatory programs, including basic IH programs
- Possess a valid driver’s license
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
- Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
- Climb stairs and caged ladders on process units
- Work outside in all weather conditions
- Enter confined spaces
- Wear a respirator, including a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as an industrial hygienist, or as a safety professional managing IH programs
- Experience in managing respiratory and gas detection programs
- Experience with Medgate/Cority, MSDSonline, and Industrial Scientific iNet Control
- Demonstrated planning and organizational skills including the ability to work independently, prioritize work, meet commitments, and proactively manage time
- Effective writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills
- Coaching, team building, and conflict resolution skills
