Description:

EH&S seeks an Occupational Safety and Health Specialist to join the Stanford University’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety.  You will support the development and implementation of institutional programs designed to promote workplace health and safety in a broad spectrum of occupational, research, learning and living environments. As an EH&S staff member, you will work closely with a large variety of personnel in facilities operations, research support, and other general University service groups.

In this role, you will:

  • Identify, assess and monitor workplace and environmental hazards, including but not limited to, chemical, physical, biological, and radiological. Recommend improvements to minimize hazard potential.
  • Conduct investigations by compiling and analyzing data of potential hazards, unsafe conditions or environmental concerns. Share findings and recommendations to limit risk.
  • Provide technical advice and interpretation of local, state, and federal regulations to achieve compliance with government and university policies.
  • Develop and conduct employee and student training, education, and awareness of environmental, safety and health activities, and/or programs.

The expected pay range for this position is $82,000 to $102,000 per annum.

Skills/Eligibility:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in arts/science in related allied/scientific field and one year experience in occupational safety and health, emergency response/management, environmental science, and/or allied/scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

 

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in occupational/industrial hygiene or a cognizant, directly related science.
  • Work experience in an academic/research environment
  • Eligibility for future certification as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the Board for Global EHS Credentialing

 

To be successful in this position, you need to bring:

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct risk assessments/evaluations and provide recommendations for risk mitigation or hazard identification.
  • Quantitative and qualitative data analysis skills.
  • Basic understanding of environmental, health, and safety principles and practices; government environmental, health, and safety requirements and university policies; and related knowledge of pertinent scientific fields to which this background can be applied.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and detail orientation and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits).

 

Additionally, preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities would include:

  • A strong understanding of occupational health, and safety principles, Cal/OSHA regulatory requirements, and general science and engineering concepts.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Being able to frequent stand, walk, and perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand
  • Will rarely need to kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, write by hand, sort and file paperwork or parts, operate foot and. or hand controls, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s license.

 

Additional Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move safely over irregular terrain or in confined locations.
  • Ability to perform duties while wearing required respiratory equipment (must pass required medical exam);

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments.
  • May rarely be exposed to potential workplace hazards including but not limited to extreme ambient temperatures, electrical sources, radiation electromagnetic fields, elevated noise, chemicals, biohazards, and allergens.
  • May rarely work in confined spaces or at heights ≥ 10 feet.
