Description:

The University of Washington Nutritional Sciences Program prepares students to improve individual and population health through the study of foods, nutrients, dietary behaviors, health outcomes, and food and policy environments. The Program offers the Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health major (BA) and Nutrition minor; graduate degrees including the MS, MPH, and PhD; and graduate level training leading to the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) professional credential.

NUTR 241: Culinary Nutrition Science

2 teaching assistant (TA) positions (20 hours per week) are available to support an undergraduate course with expected enrollment of 175-185 students.

Course Description: Explores scientific principles behind modern culinary techniques that transform raw foodstuffs into prepared foods that have sensory appeal. Homework assignments will involve food preparation.

TA duties:

  • Be available for the duration of the position: 3/16/24 - 6/15/24.
  • Attend lectures, if possible: MW 11:30 - 12:50 pm.
  • Set up and provide support for computer equipment, course website (Canvas), and instructional technologies.
  • Assist in creating assignments and evaluation rubrics.
  • Grade student assignments, projects, quizzes, and examinations.
  • Respond to student questions in class and via Canvas.
  • Meet regularly with instructional team to coordinate work.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Compensation: Teaching Assistant (TA) positions are 50% FTE (20 hours/week) from 3/16/24 to 6/15/24. Pay rates are established in accordance with the ASE union contract. The current 2023-24 monthly pay rate for a TA is $2,664 at the premaster level, $2,863 at the intermediate level, and $3,076 at the candidate level. TAs are also eligible for a tuition waiver covering in-state or out-of-state tuition (except for approximately $500 in fees) during the quarter of employment. TAs and their dependents are eligible to receive UW-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage through the Graduate Appointee Insurance Program (GAIP); up to 10 paid holidays and one personal holiday; and up to 28 hours of sick time off (prorated based on FTE).

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Master’s or doctoral students with background (education, experience) in nutrition and food systems.
  • TAs must be enrolled for at least 10 credits during the quarter of employment.
  • TA applicants without prior UW teaching or TA experience must have completed the Center for Teaching and Learning’s TA Conference (offered each September). Additional training may be necessary.
