Environmental Health Specialist I-II-III - Consumer Protection Programs - San Mateo County
Description:
We are seeking ambitious and dedicated individuals for the position of Environmental Health Specialist I-II-III - Consumer Protection Programs, to provide services to the County and some local communities, including inspection, consultation, surveys, investigations and enforcement of regulations in activities relating to water, food, wastes, housing, public pools and safety.
There are currently two regular vacancies in the Environmental Health Services Division in the Food and Pool Programs. The positions are located in San Mateo, but will travel/drive throughout the County to perform duties of the job. Fluency in English and Spanish is preferred, but not required.
San Mateo County Health’s Environmental Health Services Division ensures a safe and healthful environment in the County’s 20 cities and unincorporated areas through education, monitoring and enforcement of a variety of regulatory programs, as well as ongoing services to the community.

SALARY
EHS I: $41.65 - $46.57/hour
EHS II: $48,81 - $60.99 /hour
EHS III: $51.79 - $64.71 /hour

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Make regular inspections of food, water, housing, industrial, educational and recreational facilities for compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.
- Give instructions for correction of violations; conduct enforcement activities.
- Investigate and resolve citizen complaints.
- Advise and instruct business owners, builders, architects, engineers, public officials and other individuals on interpretation and application of environmental health laws and requirements.
- Conduct training for employees of restaurants and other establishments in environmental sanitation techniques.
- Maintain records and prepare reports and correspondence.
- Provide expert witness testimony in court proceedings.
- Provide program support.
- At the III level, research and administration of a senior project that will enhance or strengthen a component of the environmental health field, and acts as a staff resource in the area of specialty.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Skills/Eligibility:
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Principles of biological and physical sciences.
- Principles and practices of environmental health sanitation.
- Techniques of environmental health inspection, investigation and control.
- General community health problems and governmental programs designed to control or alleviate them.
- Research, evaluation and statistical methods.
- Laws, regulations and ordinances governing environmental health in California.
- Provisions of the Penal Code relating to public nuisances.
Skill/Ability to:
- Interpret laws, regulations and data.
- Define difficult problem areas, analyze complex data and make valid recommendations.
- Advise and instruct others in the principles of sanitation and environmental health.
- Enforce local ordinances and state law.
- Work independently and as a team member.
- Keep complex and accurate records.
- Prepare clear, concise reports and correspondence.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.

Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
III level: Two years of journey level experience in environmental health inspections and investigations.
Licensure/Certification:
- For the II or III level: possession of a California Certificate as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist.
