Purpose: This internship will provide one or two rising second year MPH students with hands- on experience in community health assessment and the opportunity to apply theoretic and analytic skills acquired in their Master of Public Health program. Interns will practice gathering and summarizing qualitative and quantitative data and applying the findings of community health assessment to health promotion programming for children and teens living in the areas served by Seattle Children’s.

Project: In collaboration with Seattle Children’s Community Health and Benefit team and Public Health-Seattle King County Assessment, Policy Development and Evaluation (APDE) Unit, interns will help author a pediatric community health assessment for the Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WAMI) region. The project will culminate in a written and graphical summary of pediatric community health for one or more states or geographical regions in WAMI. This project deliverable will be provided to Seattle Children’s to inform the prioritization of health issues for their 2025 Community Health Assessment.

Internship Description: This is a hybrid internship based in Seattle, WA. Supervision of work product development and management of day-to-day activities will be provided by the Social Science Epidemiologist and Evaluator on the Seattle Children’s Community Health and Benefit team. Additionally, interns will receive mentorship and coaching from APDE staff at Public Health-Seattle King County on health assessment methods, data analysis techniques, and epidemiological research concepts. Throughout the internship, students will collaborate with various members of Seattle Children’s Community Health and Benefit team on community engagement, data collection and analysis, and writing activities. Examples of tasks and responsibilities include:

• Identifying and compiling secondary pediatric community health data sources from local, state, and federal government agencies, not-for-profit organizations and hospitals, and foundations.

• Assisting with primary community data collection and analysis activities such as coordinating listening sessions with parents and caregivers of children aged 0-21, coordinating stakeholder interviews with health care providers, and analyzing survey data on community health concerns, assets, and needs.

• Summarizing and synthesizing the findings from multiple secondary data sources and community data collection activities into narratives and visualizations that represent the state of pediatric health in the WAMI region.

• Assembling a list of evidence-informed interventions to improve pediatric health and a technical appendix of available data sources in the WAMI region.

Timeline: Onboarding begins in late Spring, 2024 with work and supervision hours during the Summer of 2024.

Stipend: Approximately $2,500 for approximately 100 hours. Some travel to areas of Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho might be supported/underwritten in addition. Seattle- based lodging resources and stipends not provided.

Required competencies:

• Familiarity with health equity and anti-racism (HEAR) practices and principles and an interest in centering HEAR in community health assessment.

• Understands and can apply basic epidemiological methods and data analysis techniques.

• Comfortable working independently and accepting of mentorship, coaching, and

  feedback.

Desired competencies:

• Experience working with and synthesizing disparate data sources that differ in content (e.g. date ranges and population parameters) and format (e.g. public dashboards and .csv files).

• Ability to identify, develop, and use methodologically sound and appropriate techniques for quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis.

• Experience working with diverse communities in the WAMI region.

• Knowledgeable of key pediatric health issues including mental and behavioral health, suicide and injury prevention, substance use and overdose, and social determinants of health.
