Position Summary:  The Public Health-Global Health Major is seeking one (1) Teaching Assistant (TA), up to 20 hours per week, during autumn 2024.  The TA will support teaching of two offerings of the undergraduate course SPH 380: History and Practice of Public Health, with anticipated course enrollment of 110 students for each offering.  The TA will be expected to attend one of the two offerings (a total of two classes per week).  The TA will join a collaborative team of two TAs in addition to the instructor.  This is an undergraduate class, and the positions are appropriate for graduate students in the School of Public Health with an interest in public health history and practice, as well as an interest in teaching. 

Specific Job Functions:  

  • Assist in course planning, implementation, and assessment 
  • Attend and help facilitate class sessions (Tuesdays & Thursdays, 8:30am-9:50am and/or Tuesdays & Thursdays, 4:30pm-5:50pm, primarily in person but some sessions may be held online via Zoom)
  • Facilitate discussion sections (50 min each, up to three per week on Fridays) including presenting new material, reviewing course material, and preparing students for assignments and quizzes  
  • Grade assignments including writing assignments and weekly class participation assignments
  • Host office hours (1 hr/week)
  • Attend weekly teaching team meetings (1 hr/week) and other meetings as needed (e.g., meeting after class with students and/or teaching team)
  • Respond to student emails and track student progress including participation, grades, and accommodations
  • Update and maintain course Canvas site including discussion section presentation and recordings
  • Other tasks, as necessary

Notes: SPH 380 A lectures will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30pm-5:50pm in AUT 2024, with discussion sections happening on Fridays.  SPH 380 B lectures will occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30am-9:50am in AUT 2024, with discussion sections happening on Fridays. Salary: Half-time (50% FTE) monthly rates range from $2,664 to $4,964, commensurate with academic eligibility.  Benefits and eligibility information available here.

Required Qualifications: Minimum standing of current graduate student in the School of Public Health; satisfy a sexual misconduct background check

Preferred Qualifications: Experience and excitement for teaching undergraduates; experience in public health education and/or public health practice;  interest in teaching as a component of future career plans; experience with Canvas course platform; experience with undergraduate writing assignments.
