This position is the primary youth educator for the Community Food Education program at Solid Ground, leading classes, workshops, and events, and field trips to strengthen communities’ ability to navigate their food environments. This position will provide hands-on educational opportunities for youth to learn a

bout growing, buying, cooking, and eating nutritious foods. The Youth Food Educator leads classes in schools and school gardens, before and after school settings, and at Marra Farm

60%     Teach and prepare educational materials for cooking, nutrition, and gardening classes with youth, primarily Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade, using existing curricula with Seattle Public School students, before and after school sites.

10%     Support Community Food Education’s other programs as needed. Assist Community Food Education team with events, promotions and community level systems changes to improve community health.

10%     Provide in-person farm-based education including field trips. assist with Marra Farm maintenance and production, as needed.

10%     Perform administrative work to support classes including ordering class materials, groceries, cleaning class dishes, administering survey assessments, and work with the Youth Education Coordinator to enter track, and report data in a timely manner.

5%       Work with volunteers delivering lessons in alignment with Solid Ground’s antiracism approach.

5%       Participate in program, department, and agency meetings, Anti-Racism Initiative work, and relevant trainings as required. Support departmental and program goals as needed.

Skills/Eligibility:

Education & Experience:

Requires one of the following:

a) One-year experience teaching and coordinating classes with youth, preferably with groups of youth from a variety of cultural background and/or living on low incomes; OR
b) Bachelor’s degree in education, nutrition, social service, community service or related field; OR

c) Any combination of experience and education and measurable performance which demonstrates the capability to perform the duties of the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of nutrition, cooking, food security, and gardening
  • Passion for leading and teaching youth, preferably youth living on low incomes.
  • Detail-oriented and organized with the ability to manage time independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple time-sensitive tasks. Youth Food Educator February 2024 
  • Ability to adapt, problem-solve, and think creatively.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written 
  • Bi-lingual preferred.
  • Experience working with people from a variety of racial, cultural, and economic backgrounds, with many different lived experiences.
  • Ability to work individually in a self-directed manner and as part of a team in group projects. 
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Computer literate (MS Office software including Word, Excel, Publishers, and Outlook
