Description:

Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) Water Quality Lab Division is looking to fill Out-of-Class (OOC) Water Quality Analysts to help ensure compliance with the WA Dept of Health with regulatory monitoring with drinking water sample analysis. These analysts are responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory rules such as the Total Coliform Rule and the Surface Water Treatment Rule. 

This OOC is expected to last 6-months through December 2024 and is open to all qualified & regular Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) employees.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for monitoring water quality by analyzing water samples from various sources and evaluating results to ensure water quality standards are met.
  • Determine compliance with Federal and State drinking water standards as well as other water quality standards.
  • May be required to plan, schedule and coordinate tests and collect samples.
  • Assist in training of Water Quality Analyst, Assistants, and Water Laboratory Technicians.
  • Prepare written reports and troubleshoot and anomalies or quality control (QC) failures.

 

Skills/Eligibility:

 

Qualifications

 

ExperienceOne (1) year experience in water microbiology, water biology, or water chemistry laboratory.
 
EducationBachelor’s Degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field. (if NO degree, another 2 years of qualifying experience will be required).

 

A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class, will be considered.  


 A successful candidate will have: 

  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS); 
  • Working knowledge of microbiological analytical methods and instruments such as incubators, autoclaves, boilers, and vacuum pumps; 
  • Experience in the field of drinking water quality and analysis; 
  • Ability to keep detailed notes; 
  • Ability to work in a laboratory team setting; 
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. 

Must be able to comply with the following work schedule/job demands: 

  • Work evenings and holidays on an as-needed basis; 
  • Work weekends on a rotational basis; 
  • Stand for extended periods of time; 
  • Lift up to 50 pounds; 
  • Handle or work with toxic or hazardous substances.
