Description:

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for performing onsite work, including characterizing, segregating, documenting, and labeling hazardous and non-­ hazardous materials and waste at the facility. Updating SDS, properly storing onsite chemicals, and preparing all appropriate required documentation to meet State, EPA, and DOT regulations. Will work closely with the contract Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator on a daily basis. This position also assists the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator in developing and implementing safety programs and policies, training personnel on new protocols, and ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all health and safety regulations. Train employees on safety policies and practices, conduct regular inspections, generate health and safety assessment reports, and ensure that all occupational guidelines and regulations are adhered to.

The pay range for this position is $36.00-$46.00/hour.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (including but not limited to)

  • Maintains and updates Safety Data (SDS) and Right to Know Manuals
  • Ensure SDS are available in the workplace
  • Ensures the proper disposal of hazardous and bio-hazardous materials and waste
  • Provide services related to managing hazardous materials and waste
  • Characterization of hazardous and non-hazardous materials and waste
  • Stores hazardous materials and dangerous equipment in specially designated storage places
  • Properly pack and prepare manifests for hazardous materials and waste shipments per State, EPA, and DOT requirements
  • Must be able to use hand tools, power tools, and wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Provides written and verbal reports to supervisor
  • Follow directions, read and understand common danger placards/labels, and hazardous warning literature, including safety plans
  • Always ensure the company is prepared to submit all the relevant health and safety documents 
  • Encourage and promote the use of safer work equipment, materials, and supplies 
  • Track the number of incidents and produce reports
  • Meet with the management team to define SHEP goals and objectives for the WRC site.
  • Training employees on health and safety policies and best practices.
  • Conducting inspections and identifying hazards and EHS violations.
  • Providing solutions and intervention strategies for hygiene, health, and safety hazards.
  • Implementing new health and safety protocols and measures to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Monitoring operational processes and employee activities to ensure they are complying with all company safety guidelines and best practices.
  • Generating assessment documentation, incident and accident reports, and health and safety manuals.
  • Reporting to management, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Preparing and submitting health and safety compliance documents to the relevant organizations.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest EHS trends, policies, regulations, and best practices.
  • Assist in organizing Monthly Safety meetings
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Skills/Eligibility:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, Chemistry, or similar
  • Two (2) years of similar work experience
  • Lifting requirements of 50 lbs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check for Federal Agency to obtain security access badging
  • United States Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of safety management
  • Knowledge of pertinent local, state, and federal laws, ordinances, codes, and rules

Preferred Qualifications

  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification
  • Experience and knowledge of Alaska Native cultures
