Position Summary: The School of Public Health MPH Common Core is seeking up to three TAs for PHI 512 during the 2025 autumn quarter.  The MPH Core program includes six courses, taken as a single cohort by MPH degree students, in the first year of study. These TAs will support the teaching of 1 course, with anticipated course enrollment of approximately 75 students. This position has the potential to continue in future quarters.

PHI 512: Analytic Skills for Public Health I Course Description

To explore problems in public health/global health research and practice using both quantitative and qualitative methods, PHI 512 and PHI 513 will introduce mixed methods approaches to produce rigorous results. The importance of contextual understanding and integration of conceptual, theoretical, and methodological frameworks will be emphasized in the first of this two-part series. PHI 512 focuses on principles and methods of epidemiology and biostatistics, including: descriptive epidemiology, data summaries and presentation, study design, measures of excess risk, causal inference, screening, measurement error, misclassification, effect modification, confounding, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, p-values, sample size calculation, and modeling approaches such as linear regression analysis. Includes hands-on data analysis. The material in this course will position students to continue with EPI 513 in the Winter quarter.

All TAs are expected to attend at least one lecture session each week and the lab.

Course Times:

  • Lecture: MWF 10:00am - 11:20am
  • Lab: F 12:30pm - 2:50pm

Skills/Eligibility:

Required Qualifications: Minimum standing of current graduate student. Preference will be given to applicants in the School of Public Health. Familiarity with the R programming language.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Canvas; prior teaching assistant
