The Chu Lab, housed in the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington, is involved in several clinical research studies focused on SARS-CoV-2 and other infectious respiratory pathogens. The lab is looking to hire hourly Student Research Assistants to assist with the YIELD study, a project focused on understanding the prevalence of H5N1 virus (bird flu) around Yakima, Washington. 

As part of the study, research assistants will be set up at participating healthcare clinic locations in the greater Yakima area, including Toppenish, WA. The Chu Lab is looking for new team members to assist with consenting and enrolling new participants into the study. The ideal candidate will be based in Yakima, WA over the summer as this project is a collaboration between UW Medicine and Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic. 

 

Job Duties: 

  • Enrollment of interested individuals into the YIELD study at in-person enrollment center kiosks.
  • Possible instruction and supervision of a nasal swab collection with participants.
  • Manage, store, and transport collected nasal specimens.
  • Answering participant questions and providing general study support.
  • Participate in required team meetings.
  • Collaborate with team members regularly.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts, clearly explaining the study’s purpose and activities.
  • Assist with other study related activities as needed.

Skills/Eligibility:

Work Environment Requirements: 

Mandatory:  

  • Proficient in Spanish at a working level, especially with respect to healthcare terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with clear written and verbal communication.
  • Must reside in Yakima, WA during summer months (June – September) or be willing to commute daily within 20 miles to Yakima from a nearby town. 

Other Necessary requirements: 

  • Availability to work 10-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
  • Available to start working in June 2025.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum oversight and supervision. 

     

Minimum Education and Experience: 

Two years of college level course work in a relevant academic area AND 1 year of prior work experience. 

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Strong interest in clinical research and research activities.  
  • Work hours preferably between 9am and 8pm, including occasional weekend shifts.
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management skills.
  • Research experience managing human samples.
  • Prior clinical research experience.
  • Previous experience with REDCap or familiarity with database software.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique principles, HIPAA, and participant confidentiality
