Whatcom County seeks its next Director of Health & Community Services, providing leadership and strategic direction for the department’s comprehensive public health, environmental health, and human services programs serving 230,000+ county residents. The Director oversees an annual operating budget of approximately $60 million and a diverse staff of 150+ employees across multiple divisions. Serving as the primary liaison between the community, Department, County Executive, County Council, and Board of Health, the Director serves a key community leader advancing health equity and improving community wellbeing.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES 

  • Serves as Chief Health Strategist, providing inclusive, and equity-centered leadership to improve community well-being.
  • Leads implementation of the department’s strategic plan, ensuring program effectiveness, fiscal accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Oversees all department operations, maintaining a culture of excellence.
  • Build trust-based partnerships with staff, residents, elected officials, and community organizations to advance health equity and address the social determinants of health.

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • Monthly Exempt Salary Range (based on experience): $11,172 - $16,223
  • Annual 3.8% salary step increases
