The Safety and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator supports the mission of The Museum of Flight by working with departments and stakeholders across the organization to create and maintain a safe environment for guests, staff, and the community. This position helps to create, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety policies, risk assessments, security operations, and helps ensure regulatory compliances. The Safety and Emergency Preparedness Coordinator leads environmental health and safety initiatives, trainings, emergency preparedness, and leads related activities.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. In partnership with departments across the Museum, develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health, safety, and emergency response policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  2. Partner with facilities, exhibits, and other departments to organize and update chemical inventory/control, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  3. Update, maintain, and test the mass notification system, ensuring its effectiveness and readiness for rapid communication during emergencies.
  4. Coordinate with Human Resources to develop and deliver appropriate safety training, ongoing education, and awareness programs for staff and volunteers and to promote a culture of safety. Capture all training records and certifications for staff files.
  5. Works across departmental teams to conduct security, risk, and safety inspections/audits for Museum exhibits, construction, and repair, and provide recommendations for safe installation and maintenance.
  6. Analyze safety data and provide regular reports to appropriate management with recommendations for improvements.
  7. Evaluate and maintain safety and security, life safety systems (e.g., PPE, fire suppression systems, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, emergency eye wash stations and signage, AEDs).
  8. Help to ensure safety compliance for general facility equipment, including woodworking and metalworking shops, including specialized equipment and tools to ensure they meet safety standards and are properly maintained.
  9. Assist in the development and maintenance of the emergency preparedness plans, including evacuation procedures, and crisis management protocols. Assist in the event of an emergency and coordinate with local emergency services, when appropriate. Serve as a point of contact for health and safety emergencies.
  10. Assist in the coordination of timelines and stakeholders to conduct annual and quarterly tabletop exercises and drills (e.g., severe weather, fire, active threat, chemical spills).
  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Skills/Eligibility:

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate or other degree in Environmental Health, Emergency Management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in a safety and/or security role, preferably within a cultural or public institution.
  • Experience in emergency management systems (e.g., SMS, NIMS, ICS.

 

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations, including OSHA standards and WISHA.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse groups.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 products, emphasizing Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Calm demeanor in stressful situations and ability to make quick decisions during emergencies.
  • Able to communicate effectively with strong emphasis on communication to large, diverse groups.

 

License & Certification

  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification or may be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • Current Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record is preferred.
