The Snohomish County Health Department is looking for its next Director! This position is open until filled, with a first review date of July 11, 2025. 

The Health Department Director is responsible for the development and efficient delivery of public health services and programs throughout Snohomish County. The Health Department Director is expected to have a full working knowledge of local public health programs, laws, and regulations. This position requires innovative leadership and active collaboration with a diverse range of departments, agencies, and community partners, and managing a dynamic department to equitably address public health issues in a rapidly changing community environment.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in public administration, public health, health services management or a closely related field; PLUS six (6) years of experience in public health management or health services management/administration, including three (3) years of management experience; OR, any equivalent combination of training and/or expertise that provides the required knowledge and abilities

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree from an accredited institution in a health-related field or business-related field is preferred and may substitute for up to (2) two years of the experience requirement.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

A valid Washington State Driver’s License is required. Applicants may be subject to a background check pursuant to RCW 43.43.83

• Principles and practices of public health, the social determinants of health, and health equity, including current trends in policy, research, treatment, prevention, education, and related issues.
• Types of services performed and responsibilities in public health and environmental health activities.
• Principles and practices of public administration and management.

• Demonstrate a strong and confident presence with effective listening skills.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills which will be used to clearly communicate the policies and strategic vision to staff and citizens in a clear and concise manner.

• Strategically plan, prioritize, coordinate, organize and evaluate staffing and services.
• In collaboration with the Health Officer train, direct, and coach staff in all areas described in the job duties section.
• Evaluate programs for efficiencies and prioritize equity in service models.
• Demonstrate political acumen and sensitivity to be effective within a broad range of interests.
• Establish and maintain a professional working relationship with elected officials, department directors, County employees, and the public. Specifically, work with the County Executive to build achievable goals that will take the department to the next level of service.
• Ability to anticipate trends and upcoming changes in the political or regulatory environment that would affect public health.
• Ensure future-focused strategic planning is in place through the utilization of data driven decisions.
• Develop and administer plans, policies, and work plans.
• Use tact, discretion, respect, persuasion, diplomacy, and courtesy to gain the support and cooperation of others.
• Demonstrate cultural competency, interacting sensitively, effectively and professionally with persons from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial, ethnic, and professional backgrounds, persons of all ages, orientations, and lifestyles.
• Provide leadership and maintain a high level of personal and professional ethics, integrity, and honesty.
• Listen attentively and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in clear concise language appropriate for the purpose and parties addressed, including oral presentations before groups on a variety of complex and sensitive public health issues.
