PHI 513: Analytic Skills for Public Health II - WIN 2026 Teaching Assistant (Student/ASE)
Description:
The School of Public Health MPH Common Core is seeking two Teaching Assistants (TAs) for PHI 513, Analytic Skills for Public Health II. Each position is 20 hours per week during the Winter 2026 quarter. In the 2020-2021 academic year, the MPH program launched a series of six courses, taken as a single cohort by all MPH degree students in the first year of study. These TAs will support the teaching of one course (PHI 513), with anticipated course enrollment of approximately 130 students. Course Description
This course will introduce qualitative and mixed methods and their relevance to rigorous public health research and practice. This course places a strong emphasis on qualitative data analysis as an integral dimension of the mixed-methods approach. The first part of the course will describe contexts for and types of qualitative research questions, introduce frameworks, study designs and sampling approaches in qualitative research, and apply methods for data collection and analysis. The second part of this course focuses on mixed methods research and the integration of quantitative measures of magnitude and frequency with qualitative measures of meaning to produce rich contextual understandings of complex behaviors, cultures, and characteristics.
Class Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30am-12:50pm
Specific Job Functions:
- Assist in course coordination and implementation
- Attend all class sessions
- Present a lecture (if desired by TA)
- Co-facilitate in-class discussions
- Hold weekly office hours
- Grade assignments
- Update and maintain course Canvas site
- Request or acquire necessary equipment
- Communicate with students, and respond to student requests and emails in a timely manner
- Review assigned readings
- Provide assistance for Dedoose qualitative data analysis software
- Other tasks, as necessary
Skills/Eligibility:
Required Qualifications
Minimum standing of current graduate student. Preference will be given to applicants in the School of Public Health.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Canvas and Dedoose; prior experience as a teaching assistant
Experience with qualitative and/or mixed methods research
