Position Summary: The School of Public Health MPH Common Core is seeking two Teaching Assistants (TAs) for PHI 516. Each position is 20 hours per week during the 2026 spring quarter. The MPH Core program includes six courses, taken as a single cohort by all MPH degree students, in the first year of study. These TAs will support the teaching of 1 course, with anticipated course enrollment of approximately 130 students.
PHI 516: Public Health Practice Course Description
Public Health Practice is the culminating course of the common MPH core curriculum, designed to integrate and apply knowledge of health determinants and public health systems, analytic skills and evidence-based approaches to real world public health problem solving. This course will develop system thinking skills and an understanding of the interrelationships between public health infrastructure, public health policy, leadership, management, communication, and community engagement. Students will work in teams to apply their knowledge and skills in these areas to public health practice-based challenges using a case study framework.
Class Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-2:20pm
Specific Job Functions:
- Assist in course preparation, coordination and implementation
- Attend class sessions
- Present lectures and facilitate discussions
- Grade assignments
- Update and maintain course canvas site
- Prepare and maintain course attendance record
- Hold office hours to meet with students
- Other tasks, as necessary
Hours per week (approx.): 20
Skills/Eligibility:
Required Qualifications: Minimum standing of current graduate student. Preference will be given to applicants in the School of Public Health. Successful completion of a similar course in the past.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Canvas; prior experience as teaching assistant. Experience in public health practice.
Salary: Half-time (50% FTE) monthly rates range from $3,283 to $3,621, commensurate with academic eligibility. Benefits and eligibility information available here.
