Role Responsibilities

Harvest Against Hunger (HAH) is seeking a dynamic, creative, and collaborative communicator to join our committed team of professionals who care deeply about providing healthy food to people in need and building stronger food systems across Washington. The Communications Manager will play a critical role in developing and implementing a strategic communications plan, creating compelling content, building public awareness,and expanding the organization’s role in advocacy.  

Communications Manager Responsibilities 

 

  1. Develop, implement, and maintain a strategic communications plan.
  2. Produce compelling content for print and digital media (website, social media platforms, newsletters, brochures, media releases, advocacy messaging materials) that highlights HAH’s impact and features powerful stories about the hunger relief organizations, growers, and people we help.
  3. Maintain a consistent brand identity that aligns with HAH’s mission and values.
  4. In partnership with HAH staff, coordinate the organization’s online presence, including website content and social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube).
  5. Build and maintain relationships with media outlets to secure coverage of HAH’s work, including op-eds, produced stories, broadcasts, video, and PSAs.
  6. Develop engaging social media campaigns to raise awareness, encourage community engagement, and build an informed and inspired audience.
  7. Plan and organize town hall-style events with key stakeholders to engage the public in the collective impact and challenges faced by HAH and our partners to reduce hunger and food waste.
  8. Build relationships with HAH’s partners, other nonprofits, advocacy groups, and coalitions to create a unified voice on key issues.
  9. Cultivate relationships with influential figures, celebrities, or opinion leaders who can amplify HAH’s advocacy messages to a broader audience.
  10. Plan and organize Farm-To-Community tour events for state and local elected officials and their staff; government agency leaders and their staff; key stakeholders; and media. These events will provide participants with a deeper understanding of programs that support small farm economic viability; provide healthy and culturally familiar food to people in need; reduce food waste and related climate impacts; and foster relationships between farmers, processors, distributors, and community agencies.

Skills/Eligibility:

Qualifications

Desired Qualifications 

  • 3-5 years’ experience in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations or related area of work. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages and stories. 
  • Experience working in non-profit organizations, either as a staff member, volunteer or board member. 
  • Strong project planning, critical thinking and problem-solving skills; self-motivated and self-directed. 
  • Familiarity with digital marketing strategies and proficiency using Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube.  
  • Familiarity with web content management systems and Canva. 
  • Experience in developing media relationships, managing press outreach, writing press releases and handling media inquiries. 
  • Experience managing advocacy campaigns. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or related field. 
  • Ability to travel within Washington state.
