Position Purpose
The UW Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Coordinator 1. This is a full-time, 12-month temporary appointment being hired via UW UTemp Staffing.
Position Complexities
Assist in the implementation of study protocols and procedures. Perform all clinical research participant communications, including recruitment, informed consent, study visit scheduling, responding to participant questions, and assisting with the collection of study data and biospecimens.
Position Dimensions
The University of Washington is committed to epidemiologic research that advances understanding of the incidence, prevalence, risk factors, and prevention of infectious diseases such as influenza and SARS‑CoV‑2. The Chu Lab, part of the Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, conducts multiple large‑scale studies that have significantly contributed to RSV, influenza, and SARS‑CoV‑2 research.
This position is participant‑facing and includes interactions with UW clinicians and external collaborators. The role plays a key part in achieving project goals and supporting the growing field of infectious disease research.
Study Coordination & Management – 50%
- Assist with recruitment and enrollment of study participants, guide participants through informed consent, and coordinate scheduling and tracking of study visits.
- Manage day‑to‑day study activities, including clinic‑facilitated blood draws, clinical data entry, transporting biospecimens, and maintaining supply inventory.
- Monitor and track participant activities using REDCap and other study systems.
- Perform medical chart reviews and enter relevant laboratory results into data tracking platforms.
- Prepare supplies and materials for upcoming procedures and appointments.
Participant Communication – 15%
- Monitor the study email inbox and respond to participant inquiries.
- Schedule informed consent calls and study visits.
- Send monthly surveys and study updates through electronic mailing lists.
- Assist with distributing participant incentives.
External Team Communication & Collaboration – 10%
- Coordinate with partners at the Translational Research Unit, Institute for Systems Biology, and other collaborators regarding sample collection and handoff.
- Attend and lead collaborator meetings, prepare agendas, and coordinate communication across teams.
Protocol Development & Updates – 10%
- Collaborate with team members to develop and implement clinical protocols.
- Provide feedback to streamline workflows and improve SOPs.
- Revise study materials and protocols as needed throughout the study period.
- Adhere to protocol and SOPs; contribute to SOP development with guidance from the program manager and PI.
IRB Documentation & Reporting – 10%
- Draft study communication materials for IRB approval following study updates.
- Escalate adverse events and protocol deviations to project directors for IRB reporting.
Staff Hiring, Training & Supervision – 5%
- Participate in interviewing, onboarding, and hands‑on training of student staff.
- Manage weekly schedules and lead monthly check‑ins with study staff.
Skills/Eligibility:
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of relevant experience.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or a science‑related field.
- Experience with quantitative data management and analysis using statistical software.
- Training and/or knowledge in ethical human subjects research.
- Knowledge and experience with REDCap.
- Prior study coordination experience in an academic research setting.
- Knowledge of the human subjects IRB process, including protocol development and IRB submissions.
