The Workforce Education department supports low-income, unemployed and underemployed populations who need funding and support for education, assistance planning educational goals, and resources for finding employment. As part of Workforce Education, the Basic Food Employment & Training (BFET) program provides assistance with education and training costs at Shoreline Community College to eligible individuals currently receiving Department of Social & Health Services (DSHS) Basic Food Assistance.
Under the direction of the Program Specialist 3, this position will manage the day-to-day BFET program operations and provide comprehensive support to students receiving Department of Social & Health Services (DSHS) Basic Food Assistance. This includes determining BFET eligibility, identifying challenges to employment and educational goals and providing support to achieve success in their educational goals. This position implements state and federal program policies and facilitates specialized program activities.
Primary responsibilities include the following:
- Assist students with college and career navigation to reach their employment goals
- Respond to student inquiries and communicate BFET eligibility requirements and enrollment procedure
- Conduct BFET intake sessions, including developing an Individual Employment Plan, determining BFET student eligibility and assessing barriers to education and employment
- Provide on-going support to BFET students and connect students to on campus support services and community-based organizations that address their individual needs
- Process and track student applications; create and maintain detailed student information on database management system; authorize and coordinate student support awards by working closely with internal college stakeholders
- Monitor student eligibility through DSHS EJAS system; track student credit amounts each month; check satisfactory academic progress quarterly and work with students to create an action plan that helps facilitate student success
- Document student progress monthly in DSHS EJAS system for all program participants
- Support a diverse student population who may be experiencing challenges including: homelessness, mental health, financial hardship and more
- Develop and foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Other duties as assigned of a similar level/nature

Required Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education/experience working in social service or reflated career field.
Knowledge Of:
- Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook and electronic record management systems
- Challenges encountered by low-income populations
- Educational programs and student support services
- BFET, Worker Retraining, Opportunity Grant, and WorkFirst program guidelines and requirements
- Community-based supports and resources
Skill In:
- Fostering a climate of belonging through awareness and responsiveness
- Time management, organization, and ability to meet competing deadlines/priorities
- Entering and/or retrieving data accurately in computerized record keeping systems
- Handling difficult and sensitive situations, using sound independent judgment within college & legal guidelines
- Writing/editing/proofreading clear and concise materials resulting in effective oral and written communication with individuals inside and/or outside of the College
- Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships at all organizational levels
- Ability to work with a diverse group of students, staff, and the public in a friendly, courteous and helpful manner
