Paid Internship for Masters Student - Seattle Childrens (Internship)
Description:
Purpose: This internship allows a rising second year master’s level student to gain handson experience in community engagement, survey research methods and community health assessment. Students will have the opportunity to practice designing survey tools and data
collection methods, collecting survey data, and analyzing, visualizing and interpreting survey data findings.
Project: This paid internship will support the design and implementation of a survey for parents of children ages 0 to 21 to learn about their concerns with children’s health,
resources and assets that improve health, and experiences accessing pediatric healthcare. Survey data will be used for Seattle Children’s 2028 Community Health Assessment (CHA) and will influence the types of community-based programming that Seattle Children’s will implement from 2028 to 2030.
Internship Description: This internship will be based in Seattle, WA and involves hybrid onsite and remote work. Frequent travel around the Puget Sound area and occasional travel to other areas of Washington is required. The intern will be hosted by the Community Health team within the External Affairs Department. Supervision and mentorship will be provided by the team’s Social Science Epidemiologist and Evaluator. Throughout the
internship the student will collaborate with other members of the Community Health team on community engagement, data collection, and data interpretation. Examples of tasks include:
• Review survey data collected in previous CHA cycles to identify questions to retain and exclude in the next survey instrument.
• Conduct literature reviews and landscape analyses to understand the current state of pediatric health and well-being and to identify key community partners to inform survey design and data collection methods.
• Attend community events and table in community spaces to distribute the survey to
parents.
• Summarize survey data using descriptive statistics and create data visualizations and data briefs
Skills/Eligibility:
Required Skills/Competencies:
• Familiarity with social drivers of health (SDOH) and pediatric or family health.
• Basic understanding of survey research methods.
• Basic understanding of analyzing, visualizing, and interpreting data.
• Comfortable working independently and accepting of mentorship, coaching, and feedback.
• Comfortable engaging with community members and soliciting survey participation.
• Ability to travel independently to various community sites across the Puget Sound region and Washington State.
Desired Skills/Competencies:
• Has completed public health coursework.
• Experience working, and comfort engaging directly, with diverse communities in
Washington, Alaska, Montana, or Idaho.
• Knowledgeable of key pediatric health issues such as mental health, substance use and overdose, suicidality and injuries.
• Fluency in a language frequently spoken in the Greater Seattle Area

Eligibility:
• Rising second year master’s students who have completed at least one class
focused on survey research methods. Students may use this internship to complete
their MPH practicum.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle for travel to community events.
• As intern will work in a community environment, completion of required
vaccinations and/or screenings before start of internship is expected.
