The University of Washington Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Program prepares students to improve individual and population health through the study of foods, nutrients, dietary behaviors, health outcomes, and food and policy environments. The Program offers the Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health major (BA) and Nutrition minor; graduate degrees including the MS, MPH, and PhD; and graduate level training through the Graduate Coordinated Program in Dietetics (GCPD) leading to the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) professional credential.

One hourly reader/grader (R/G) position (average 15-19 hours per week) is available to support a joint undergraduate/graduate seminar with an expected enrollment of 175-225 students.

NUTR 400/500: Food Systems, Nutrition, and Health Seminar
Instructor: Yona Sipos

Course Description: Examines the many facets of the modern food supply from production and processing to distribution, marketing, (and) retail, and resource recovery. Systems approach to foods studies considers geopolitical, agricultural, (environmental) ecological, social, equity, and economic factors along the pathway from harvest to human and environmental health.

Course Description: Examines emerging issues in food systems, nutrition, and health as they relate to personal and public health. Reviews evidence in the context of food systems and health policy.

Duties:

• Attend lectures (required): Th 12:30-1:20 p.m. Please indicate your ability to attend lectures in your cover letter.
• Set up and provide ongoing support for computer equipment, course website (Canvas), and instructional technologies.
• Support guest speakers: coordinate logistics (including parking), assist with on-site visits and presentations (including equipment set up and technical support), and write thank-you notes.
• Collect and email a subset of student reflections to guest speakers following their presentations.
• Grade weekly and final student assignments.
• Respond to student questions in class and via Canvas.
• Meet regularly with instructor to coordinate responsibilities.
• Additional duties may be assigned.

Skills/Eligibility:

ELIGIBILITY NOTE: Students enrolled in NUTR 500 in autumn 2026 are not eligible.

Eligibility Requirements:

• Please read all requirements listed in the job description. If you are unable to meet the posted requirements (especially lecture or section attendance), please do not apply for the role.
• Master’s or doctoral students with background (education, experience) in nutrition and/or food systems.
• R/Gs must be enrolled in at least 5 credits during the quarter of employment.
• Participation in the Center for Teaching and Learning’s “Teaching@UW: Strategies for TAs” is recommended for R/G applicants but not required. Additional training may be necessary.
• If you are not a native English speaker, you must meet the UW Graduate School’s spoken English proficiency requirements to hold a R/G position. Compensation: Hourly Reader/Grader (R/G) positions are appointed from 9/16/26 to 12/15/26. The 2026-27 pay rate (established in accordance with the ASE union contract) is $24.07 per hour. Weekly hours will vary based on workload and will be paid according to hours reported on a timesheet. R/Gs accrue one hour of sick time for every 40 hours worked; accrual begins at the start of employment and is available for use the following month. Hourly R/G positions do not qualify for tuition waivers or insurance benefits.
