Position Summary: The Public Health-Global Health Major is seeking up to two (2) Teaching Assistants (TA), each up to 20 hours per week, during Autumn 2026.. TAs will support teaching of the undergraduate course SPH 396: Intensive Public Health Service Learning. This is a service-learning class, and the position is appropriate for SPH graduate students who have an interest in community development and partnerships, service-learning in public health, and public health practice. TAs will be mentored to teach equity-centered content and to develop course content in coordination with community partners. TAs will be asked to offer mentoring and professional development support for graduating seniors. Due to the equity-centered nature of the course as well as the work with community partners, specific course content could change from quarter-to-quarter, therefore, TAs are trained and expected to respond to those needs, as well as form excellent, reliable, and positive relationships with community partners. TAs for this course are ambassadors of PH-GH Major, and by extension SPH and UW when it comes to their equity work with community partners. TAs are considered to be an integral part of the instructional team and are trained and mentored in a way that supports this model. TAs must be in class on the dates and times that class is in session. Specific Job Functions:
- TAs are responsible for weekly sections: Attend all section meetings, lead the administrative aspects of the section, and coordinate with community partners and faculty lead to develop tailored course content for the section
- Grade weekly assignments with a 1-week turnaround, and occasional larger assignments on a longer timeline
- Meet with community partners with the lead instructors of the course
- Participate in weekly and monthly teaching team meetings for course planning
- Assist in course organization and implementation
- Be familiar with all assigned course materials and readings
- Present lectures and facilitate discussions where issues of equity are built into the content
- Host Facilitated Study Groups and/or office hours (2 hrs/week)
- Update and maintain course canvas site, create assignments and project groups
- Communicate with students regarding their progress in the course
- Request or acquire necessary equipment
- Prepare and maintain course attendance records
- Review literature
- Other tasks, as necessary
Skills/Eligibility:
Required Qualifications: Minimum standing of current graduate student in the School of Public Health; highly organized; ability to meet competing deadlines; ability to represent the teaching team with a high standard of integrity; satisfy a sexual misconduct background check
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with CANVAS, experience and excitement for teaching undergraduates, exposure to and work with community-based organizations
