Position Summary: The Public Health-Global Health Major is seeking one (1) Teaching Assistant (TA), up to 20 hours per week, during Autumn 2026. The TA will support teaching of the undergraduate course SPH 493: Public Health Portfolio. This course serves as the culminating experience for Public Health-Global Health majors documenting their progress through the Major.
The aim of the Portfolio course is to collect artifacts from the student’s curricular and co-curricular activities that showcase their classroom learning, understanding anti-racism in public health practice, professional experiences and development, and personal commitment to public health in any field that they choose to pursue. Portfolios will include a personal statement, a resume, reflective learning entries about each artifact, and how they plan to implement their commitment to the health and wellness of populations upon graduation and beyond.
This position is appropriate for an SPH graduate student who has an interest in supporting undergraduates in their professional development and identity as a public health professional. The TA will be asked to offer mentoring and professional development support for graduating seniors, including help for resumes, written narratives, and web-based portfolios. The TA is considered to be an integral part of the instructional team and is trained and mentored by passionate instructors in a way that supports this model.
Specific Job Functions:
- Attend and actively participate in all course sessions
- Lead sections of the course, including facilitating conversations with individual and small groups of students
- Lead the administrative aspects of the course including Canvas, create assignments and project groups, and Zoom/Panopto recordings
- Grade weekly participation assignments and occasional larger assignments with a 1-week turnaround
- Participate in weekly teaching team meetings for course planning and communicate regularly with the teaching team between meetings as needs arise.
- Be deeply familiar with all assigned course materials, readings, and assignments so as to answer student questions on these aspects of the course
- Host office hours (2 hrs/week)
- Communicate with students regarding their progress in the course and respond to their questions
- Request or acquire necessary equipment
- Prepare and maintain course and student records
- May present lectures and facilitate discussions where issues of equity and technology are built into the content
- Other tasks, as necessary
Skills/Eligibility:
Required Qualifications: Minimum standing of current graduate student in the School of Public Health; highly organized with ability to meet competing deadlines; experience creating or editing digital platforms for portfolios (e.g., Google Sites, Canva websites, or Wordpress); ability to represent the teaching team with a high standard of integrity; satisfy a sexual misconduct background check
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with the teacher side of Canvas, experience and excitement for teaching undergraduates, experience with storytelling and identifying tacit knowledge in stories.
Notes: SPH 493 lectures will occur on Mondays, 10:00am-11:20am in AUT 2026, with discussion sections happening on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Please consult the Time Schedule for additional information about days, times, and locations. The TA is expected to participate in every class meeting.
Salary: Half-time (50% FTE) monthly rates range from $3,611 to $3,983, commensurate with academic eligibility. Benefits and eligibility information available here.
