Description:
Essential responsibilities:
- Professional knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to CDC and NIH biosafety guidelines as they apply to infectious agents, recombinant DNA, and bloodborne pathogens.
- Demonstrated ability to apply core biosafety concepts, including criteria for establishing appropriate biosafety containment levels across diverse research and laboratory applications.
- Demonstrated knowledge of recombinant DNA technology, viral vectors, and biological hazards.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the political acumen to communicate effectively within a diverse and multidisciplinary environment.
- Experience participating in or managing Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs).
- Participation in inspections of laboratories and other spaces to assess and ensure regulatory and institutional compliance.
- Conduct workplace safety inspections following defined procedures, including evaluation of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirators, protective eyewear, and hardhats, through direct observation of work practices and engagement with personnel.
- Identify potential accident and health hazards, including toxic vapors, mold, mildew, and explosive gas-air mixtures, and assist in implementing appropriate control measures such as ventilation system adjustments.
- Assist in the investigation of accidents and injuries by identifying root causes and recommending corrective and preventive actions.
- Communicate with client personnel regarding workplace safety concerns and recommend practical corrective actions.
- Independently conduct routine EHS safety trainings, including new employee orientation, hazard communication, and powered industrial truck (fork truck) training.
- Prepare written documentation and reports, including accident reports, and complete required OSHA and other regulatory recordkeeping forms.
- Assist in the development, drafting, and updating of occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and manuals.
Skills/Eligibility:
Basic Qualifications:
- One to five years of progressive professional experience in biosafety, environmental health and safety, research compliance, or research or diagnostic laboratory environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or a related field such as Occupational Health and Safety, Chemistry, or Engineering.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
- Must be eligible to work in the United States without future sponsorship.
- Must have a reliable form of transportation.
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience working in a BSL-2 and/or ABSL-2 laboratory environment.
- Completion of ABSA or other professional development coursework (e.g., ABSA Principles and Practices).
- Active membership in at least one national professional safety organization, including participation in local chapters.
- Progress toward obtaining a professional designation or certification (e.g., RBP, ASP).
