Job Responsibilities
-
Policy & regulatory compliance
- Develop, implement, and administer occupational safety and health policies and procedures which may include industrial hygiene programs
- Research, interpret, and apply federal and state safety and industrial hygiene regulations
Inspections, audits & hazard investigation
- Conduct job site and facility safety audits; investigate accidents and unsafe conditions and recommend corrective actions
- Evaluate construction, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene programs; utilize noise dosimeters, air monitors, and related equipment
Training & Job Safety Analysis development
- Develop Job Safety Analyses and coordinate safety training on Seattle Public Utilities programs and procedures for supervisors and employees
- Educate and collaborate with staff and leadership on safety best practices
Front Line Operations Safety Support
- Support and Review Trenching and Excavation and Fall Protection Workplans, Confined Space Permits.
- Develop Health and Safety plans for special projects coordinating with project managers.
- Ensure enforcement of safety regulations through line supervisors and management
Collaboration & stakeholder engagement
- Partner with safety committees, department heads, and City, state, and federal officials to implement safety programs
- Attend dispatch, operations, and leadership meetings to promote safety practices and policies
Skills/Eligibility:
Experience: Three (3) years of experience in a safety or health related field or equivalent field.
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health, Safety, Toxicology, Industrial Hygiene. Biology, Engineering, or another related field.
Combinations of appropriate education, training, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
- Required to wear personal protective equipment, follow safety procedures and exercise caution during inspections.
- Requires being on call 24 hours/day for response to emergencies.
- Work is performed in both office and at jobsites.
- Required to be part of the safety office standby rotation for emergency response
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
- At the time of appointment must hold a valid Washington State Driver License, or ability to do so within 30 days of hire date.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience developing Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in an operations environment
- Experience with database management and creating safety reports
- Effective oral and written communication skills at all levels of an organization
- Familiarity with confined space entry, lockout/tagout (LOTO), traffic control and flagging, fall protection, trenching and shoring, and hazardous waste operations in construction and general industry
- Experience developing site-specific safety plans and reviewing contractor safety plans
- Experience reviewing and developing safety procedures
- Ability to facilitate technical training and presentations
- Ability to work collaboratively and contribute effectively in a team environment
- Commitment to providing responsive and equitable service to internal and external customers
- Proficiency in safety management systems and Microsoft 365
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification is a plus, but not required — we encourage candidates with equivalent experience to apply
