Description:

This position will support United Way’s food security team in reducing hunger, with a particular focus on supporting federally funded child nutrition programs. This position will provide a blend of programmatic communications, marketing, project coordination, advocacy, and program support, to help partners understand and advance food security priorities across Washington State.

  • Programmatic Communications and Resource Development
    • Develop engaging written and visual materials that support United Way’s food security work, with a focus on the Hunger Free Washington initiative and federal child nutrition programs.
    • Translate complex program and policy information into accessible materials for a range of audiences, including community partners, school districts, policymakers, funders, and community members.
    • Draft and support content for partner- and community-facing materials, including Hunger Free Washington blog posts, newsletters, presentations, social media content, and reports.
    • Create impactful print and digital materials using Canva or other design tools that effectively communicate program impact, available resources, and opportunities for partners, policymakers, and community members.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners to coordinate effective and aligned storytelling, ensuring information conveys impact while being accurate and audience appropriate.
  • Advocacy, Policy, and Public Awareness Support
    • Provide logistical and communications support related to food security advocacy priorities, including tracking policy developments, preparing summaries and briefing materials, drafting advocacy communications, and supporting public awareness campaigns.
    • Assist with the creation of briefing materials, talking points, one-pagers, partner alerts, and other tools that help communicate policy priorities.
  • Event Planning and Support
    • Coordinate high quality in-person and virtual events that advance food security priorities, including but not limited to statewide meetings, trainings, advocacy events, webinars, and partner convenings.
    • Support a positive participant experience by ensuring events are well-organized, accessible, and responsive to partner needs.
  • Provide communications, administrative, and project coordination support for broader statewide food security initiatives and special projects as assigned.
  • Support broader work maximizing access to federal nutrition programs statewide as assigned.

Skills/Eligibility:

  • Demonstrated understanding of social and racial justice and equity, with a proven commitment to apply racial and economic justice lenses in both personal and workplace contexts.
  • Lived experience and/or demonstrated professional skills working within a diverse work environment.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills. Ability to tailor communications, including blogs, reports, social media content, and other mediums, for a variety of audiences and platforms.
  • Basic proficiency using Canva or similar graphic design platforms to create visually engaging materials. 
  • Interest in public policy, advocacy, and systems change related to food security. Previous policy experience is not required.
  • Ability to quickly and concisely synthesize large amounts of information.
  • Ability to execute at a high level, with strong follow-through, in fast-paced environments with tight deadlines.
  • Ability to multi-task; effective time and project management skills; able to independently plan projects from inception to execution.
  • Passion for helping alleviate hunger in our community.
