The Healthy Brain Research Network (HBRN) within the Health Promotion Research Center in the University of Washington School of Public Health has won a 2018 APEX Grand Award for Publication Excellence.

The School’s HBRN center partnered with the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging and other community organizations to design a guide for service providers to educate Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) about dementia. The guide – called “Connecting with AAPIs about Dementia: An Action Guide for Service Providers” – is among six APEX winners for “one-of-a-kind publications.”

The action guide sheds light on barriers to effective dementia treatment, shares research on culturally appropriate messages to improve early dementia identification, and offers recommendations and resources to better serve the AAPI community.

One hundred APEX Grand Award winners were selected out of more than 1,400 entries. APEX Awards were based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content and the ability to achieve overall communications excellence.

The Health Promotion Research Center is the coordinating center of the HBRN, a national thematic network of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The network consists of six CDC Prevention Research Centers, including one located at the UW, and two affiliate centers.

The School’s HBRN center is led by Basia Belza, adjunct professor of health services at the School and professor of bio-behavioral nursing and health informatics at the UW School of Nursing. Belza and her team developed and disseminated the action guide with additional support and guidance from the Alzheimer’s Association, the Dementia Action Collaborative of Washington State, the Washington State Department of Health and the Seattle Human Services Department Innovation Fund.
