Thursday, November 5, 2009

On December 1—World AIDS Day—Grace John-Stewart, MD, PhD will present the School of Public Health's Fall 2009 Distinguished Faculty Lecture and School of Medicine's Science in Medicine Lecture: Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV-1: From Discovery to Delivery. The lecture will be presented at 1:30PM in Hogness Auditorium, A-420 Health Sciences. Dr. John-Stewart is Professor of Global Health, Professor of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Professor of Epidemiology in Public Health. She also directs the UW Center for AIDS and STD.

In 2007, almost 400,000 children around the world became infected with HIV, mainly through mother-to-child transmission. Over 90% of these children reside in Africa. As a member of the UW-Kenya collaborative team, Dr. John-Stewart has conducted studies to define timing, co-factors, and mechanisms of mother-to-child HIV-1 transmission; clinical trials of interventions to prevent HIV-1 transmission; and implementation studies to refine the delivery of services.

The lecture is open to all faculty, staff, and students and will also be televised at the following locations:

  • Harborview Medical Center Research and Training Building, Room 113
  • VA Puget Sound Health Care System (Seattle Division, Building 1, Room 518; American Lake, Building 81, Room 1132)
