Health Sciences Education Building Location

With the Population Health Facility a little over half way to completion, a second new building is coming. Design planning has kicked off for the Health Sciences Education Building (HSEB), which is slated to open in summer 2022. This new $100 million building will be located just west of T-Wing and in front of the Rotunda.  The four story, almost 100,000 sq. ft. HSEB will be focused entirely on teaching, housing multiple large (128 person), medium (72 person) and small (16-24 person) active learning classrooms, as well as student gathering/study spaces. HSEB will also sport a new anatomy lab, as well a small suite of clinical skills labs. The origins of this building were in thoughts about inter-professional education (IPE) between all of the Health Sciences schools and some may remember this as the ‘IPE Building’. All of the Health Sciences schools will share use of the classrooms and other facilities once built.

As design planning is just in the early phases, there are as yet no sketches or floorplans to share of the new building. This much is known, however: HSEB will be a stand-alone building, breaking the ‘endless hallways’ feel of the greater Health Sciences complex in a first step toward the ‘urban village’ concept for the complex envisioned by the South Campus master plan. The building will also incorporate exposed timber and other more natural features – a sharp departure from the concrete bunker architecture of existing Health Sciences complex.
