Xiao-Hua (Andrew) Zhou, professor of biostatistics at the University of Washington School of Public Health, has been elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science.

Zhou, also an adjunct professor of psychiatry & behavioral sciences in the School of Medicine, is the only UW faculty member included among this year’s AAAS honorees. Zhou was elected by his peers as part of the Section on Statistics for distinguished contributions to the field of biostatistics, particularly in the development of new statistical methods in diagnostic medicine and analysis of health care cost data.

"It is a great honor for me to be elected as an AAAS Fellow, and I am happy to see that my work on diagnostic medicine and health services has been recognized by AAAS," Zhou said.

Zhou is director and research career scientist in the Biostatistics Unit at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Seattle Medical Center and has been a full professor at the UW since 2005.

He co-authored the first textbook on statistical methods in diagnostic medicine and in 2004 was elected as a fellow of the American Statistical Association. Before joining the UW faculty, Zhou was an associate professor of biostatistics at Indiana University School of Medicine.

Zhou received a BS in mathematics from Sichuan University in 1984, an MS in Statistics from the University of Calgary in 1987, and a PhD in Biostatistics from Ohio State University in 1991. He completed a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in biostatistics at Harvard University in 1993.

AAAS Fellows will be honored Feb. 18 during the 2017 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston and in an upcoming announcement in Science magazine. The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874.
