SPH Professor Serves on IOM Panel on Mental Health in Military

Monday, April 7, 2014

Dr. Donald Patrick, professor of health services at the University of Washington School of Public Health, served on an Institute of Medicine committee assessing military efforts to prevent psychological disorders among active-duty service members and their families.

Dr. Patrick was one of 13 experts on the panel, which evaluated programs designed to prevent post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, substance abuse, suicide, and family violence. During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Institute says, nearly one million service personnel were diagnosed with at least one mental-health disorder. The cost of treatment was nearly $1 billion in fiscal year 2012.

Among its findings, the panel concluded the Department of Defense faces a number of challenges, "including an insufficient evidence base to support its interventions and a lack of systematic evaluation and performance measures." Read a summary of the panel's findings.
